If you don't follow me on twitter, then you won't know I have taken my dreadlocks out. I did it about a week ago, simply by using my fingers and brushing with shampoo. A lot. The reason? They just got annoying! They would have been too high maintenance to get them to a 'proper dreadlock-y' standard.

Now, I thought to myself, my hair is really boring... I should dye it! So last Friday, I decided to go into town. After waiting an hour for the bus in the sweltering heat, and about half an hour stuck in traffic, I finally got into Blue Banana to buy some hair dye!

I chose Coral Blue and Shocking Pink.

Snipping the tops off the bottles and shampooing my hair, I covered my body with an old towel and got to work, spreading the dye just on the tips.

I left it for about 25 minutes, and went to watch a bit of QI.

And then...

Voila! Pink and blue hair! Yes, I am wearing my Stickaid 2011 shirt...

Ok, so after WAY too much time, and WAY too much Tetris, my dreads are finally finished. It would be an understatement to say I am relieved, and even thinking about the tiresome pain of backcombing and endless tantrums (I really can't help myself... when I'm tired I would shout at someone for making me a cup of tea.) makes me shake. But on this one occasion, I will recall the events of the past few hours:

Equipment:

I got this great Dreadhead HQ kit full of all the stuff you need to make dreadlocks off the internet, which came with shampoo, locking accelerator, wax, a load of grips and a metal comb. I was reading about it and it said that a plastic comb wouldn't work for this hardcore backcombing, and I was like "yeeeaahh... right.", but seriously, even the metal one started bending!! Also, my bible for this whole experience was the Dreadhead HQ website, so if you have ANY interest in dreadlocks, head right on over there.

Sectioning:

After washing my hair with non-residue shampoo, dad (my hairdresser- thank you!) undertook the fiddly task of sectioning the whole of my hair into sections, a bit smaller than the dread size I wanted.

Spraying the stuff on:

The 'stuff' is locking accelerator, and spraying it on is easier said than done.

Backcombing:

I'm not entirely sure what goes on here, you would have to ask my dad. Or the very good website I mentioned earlier. It does hurt unbearably when you start the dread off though...

And finally, waxing:

Basically just putting a really small amount of special dread wax in each dread. Thisis a picture before the wax went in:

Finally, my very own dreadlocks. The photos don't really show off the whole dready-ness of them, plus mature dreadlocks look better than half hour old ones (I hope!!)... What will my flute teacher say...

dreadlocks

Everyone has their opinion on them, and honestly, most people I know hate them, but me... i love them! Of course, I am talking about dreadlocks.

I have wanted dreadlocks for about five years now, pretty much since I realised what they were, but I have never really thought about actually doing it... and the other day I was thinking about it again... and I mean actually thinking... and I came to one question: Why not actually do it?!

So I am.

As soon as the holidays come, I will soon be the proud owner of some dreads! Like I said before, a lot of people hate them, but I think some people look genuinely amazing with them. (I am not too sure if all these pictures are with real dreads, but they all look awesome anyway!!)

Hair

"Oh dear, have you made a mistake?"

These are the oh-so-wrong words, spoken from my Granny. In fact, contrary to the afore mentioned hairdresser trip, this time my (poor, damaged) hair has been dyed almost correctly! And by my mother! Who had never even backcombed before!

Sure, it is sort of ginger, and bound to snap off any day now. And the back looks different to the front. And the blonde the hairdressers wrongly put in my fringe is a completely different shade. But who am I to complain? (Remind me never to pay more than £10 for any hair treatment by the way. Ever.)

(In case you were wondering, I used L'oréal Paris Perfect Blonde (ha) Creme Maximum Bleaching Kit, costing around £6 from Boots, and i did it by backcombing my whole head in sections- so I looked like a starfish- and then dying the ends.)

Hair

Ever since I read about Bleach, the hairdresser to the stars that is home to colourful dip dyes, hair stencils and Day-Glo styles to make you fall in love with, I have really fallen… I want pink hair!

Not all over pink (yet), just the ends… I am having a few doubts though, I mean, is it a bit weird to match your hair with your braces?

This Weekend...

Thought I'd share with you a summary of my weekend:

1) I dyed my hair 'brown' which turned out slightly darker than i hoped. To be fair, I did use 'Deep Brown-Black', but i had blonde hair before, so...

...anyway, I used John Frieda Precision Foam Colour, after hearing some good reviews about it. Let me tell you two things about it: 1) The hair colour chart on the side lies. 2) The conditioner that comes with it makes you hair really soft, and there is enough for quite a few uses! Woop!

2) My 'Meat is Murder' top came in the post on Saturday!! Yey!!

3) I got a new hairbrush. I've alway wanted one like this :)
